Disable built-in webcam in Ubuntu on an Aspire One

December 27th, 2010 No comments

The webcam in my Acer Aspire One model ZG8 failed some time ago. Before I get time to open it and resolve the problem, I do not want the uvcvideo driver to load. This has resulted in the following unnecessary messages in dmesg:

[ 3448.124713] uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device WebCam (064e:a102)
[ 3449.124244] uvcvideo: Failed to set UVC probe control : -110 (exp. 26).
[ 3450.124220] uvcvideo: Failed to query (129) UVC probe control : -110 (exp. 26).
[ 3450.124243] uvcvideo: Failed to initialize the device (-5).

So the following procedure disables the webcam until I am ready to work with it again.

Locate file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Edit it as administrator, for example:
sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Add the following line at the end of the file:

blacklist uvcvideo

You should not see any more uvcvideo messages from this point.
